ESTERO, FL – Miromar Outlets is teaming up with WINK News and 92.5 FM to help stock the Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food bank will have a truck and volunteers on hand at Miromar Outlets to collect food donations this Friday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next to MUNDOFOX Playland.
The food bank receives food from the U.S Department of Agriculture. If the federal government shutdown continues for an extended period of time, the food bank does not know when it may receive more of this nutritious food. USDA food makes up 10% of the total food distributed by the food bank. The rest of the food bank’s food comes through private sources, the food industry and fundraising.
You can help by donating canned meats, stews, chicken, tuna, peanut butter, beans, rice, canned fruit, vegetables, pasta, pasta sauce, baby food, cereal, fruit juice, canned soup and other non-perishable items.
A recent study by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), found that from 2008-2012, Cape Coral/Fort Myers ranked 3rd in the country, with 30.6 percent of households with children reporting that they did not have enough money to buy needed food.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank provides food each month to more than 30,000 people through a network of 150 partner agencies that run soup kitchens, pantries and other programs in Lee, Hendry, Glades, Charlotte and Collier counties. For each donated dollar, the food bank can distribute $6 worth of food and grocery items. For more information contact the Harry Chapin Food Bank at (239) 334-7007.
